Bhutan Buddhist Winter Retreat
Relacionado a este país: Bhoutan

Buddhist Winter Retreat

During the winter, with perpetual clear blue skies, in the peaceful atmosphere of Bhutan, with its blossoming Buddhist culture surrounded by snow capped peaks, the Hotel Zhiwa Ling introduces week long Buddhist retreats. With the growing quest for spiritual fulfilment and interest in Buddhism as the seeming answer to this search, the retreat program has been created to impart Buddhist lifestyle and knowledge in the luxurious surroundings of the Zhiwa Ling Hotel.

The hotel will host a number of world renowned and revered spiritual teachers; Rinpoches and Lamas; to disclose Buddhist teachings at basic, intermediary and advanced levels. The course content has been designed to match the needs of all those seeking conscious evolution and communicate the essence of Buddhism. It has been developed by revered Rinpoches living around the Paro valley, who have kindly accepted to teach people from all faiths, to make up for spiritual lacking felt by the modern world.

The one week program will be offered from the month of December till mid March. Every week, the program will feature different aspects of Buddhism with talks and events on special topics everyday. The week will also feature special Buddhist ceremonies from rituals to Longevity blessing. Spacious meditation rooms face one of the most sacred places of Bhutan - the ‘Takstang’ also known as Tiger’s Nest.

The hotel with its Swedish under floor heating system will complement the legendary warmth of the Bhutanese staff! The temple in the hotel, with its 400 year old pillars brought from a 16th century monastery emit the energy of those thousand of souls that have passed through it in many centuries. This can be felt during meditation or attending a resonating Buddhist chant. In this setting, the union with other practitioners under the auspices of Rinpoches, will enrich not only the mind but more importantly, the soul.

It is most assured that the participants in these courses will not only enrich their lives but will have tremendous take home value that will be positively reflected in their lives.

Bhutan Buddhist Winter Retreat

Buddhist Winter Retreat 2008

Secluded in the Himalayas, Bhutan for centuries have provided a haven for practitioners from all faiths. Its towering mountains, sacred lakes, and most of all, the inaccessibility attribute have attracted the faithful to find a place here in order gain nirvana or ultimate salvation. Even now, well into the 21st century, Bhutan still maintains the same peaceful environment that pulled the early practitioners – the pristine forest, towering mountains and a culture that has evolved and developed into the highest form of Buddhist living.

And in these setting, Zhiwa Ling, a boutique hotel with its own temple has designed a program (check www.bhutanretreat.com) specifically for those seeking either initial introduction into the Buddhist teachings, or its intermediary and higher form. The program has been created to accommodate all those seeking conscious evolution, from any professional, cultural or religious background.

The hotel situated in Paro, one of the most sacred valleys of Bhutan, faces well known Tiger’s Nest, an important meditation place clinging to the cliff ledge almost magically. The hotel, amidst this blossom of cultural and natural environment, offers with its blend of most modern comfort technology and age old architecture, a chance to be shown the way to Buddha-hood by some of the highest Buddhist spiritual teachers in the world.

This program would feature week long Buddhist teachings, specialised or general, where among other activities, meditation and Tibetan art of relaxation – the ‘Kunn-nye’ would be arranged. Some weeks would also impart the age old art of scroll painting and some of the thirteen traditional arts and crafts of the country. There are couple of weeks that would concentrate on the powerful Buddhist herbal healing techniques, whereby the guests could rejuvenate themselves physically as well as spiritually.

This is winter program, when the skies are all the time clear and surrounding snow covered mountains visible. The winter season is also the time of pilgrimage in the country, where locals in their traditional wear can be seen visiting different Buddhist sites with their families. The Bhutanese winter also brings annual rituals, where the guardian deities are appeased for good coming lunar year. The participants would be treated to sights and sounds of all these happenings, while being rejuvenated in the warm hospitality atmosphere of hotel, heightened by Swedish under floor heating and enriching spirituality.

Youth safety in border towns, issue raised by the YES Bhutan Network members
Relacionado a este país: Bhoutan

Safety and security measures for youths confined within Indo-Bhutan border towns.

It is something, ‘crying over the spilt milk’ when we revive bygone incidents that had inevitably happened with some youths residing at around the adjacent vicinity to Indo-Bhutan border. In the elapsed recent years, a few students endured brutal killings using ‘Khukuri’ among young peers could not be clearly detected and revealed. When we peered into the matter and tried to glean information on the issue, it is deciphered that such killings using weapon had happened under the influence of drugs and vengeful circumstances. Such situation also ensued on their way owing to girls who make adolescently love among themselves.

Now, let us visualize quite seriously on this fighting and killing issue of the youths in and around the places. Ofcourse, it will not give much impact or hurt among the individual concerns in general but on the contrary, let individual parents think of the situation of those parents who have lost their loved ones on such imminent incidents. Is not it gravely anguishing and mournful to the victimized parents? And one should not forget that such awful day or venerating situation might not come or develop on any one of us any time. This sort of dreadful accident might impend even to a well-protected family or home.

Therefore, it is the duty of we citizens of this country to shoulder shared responsibility to strongly bear in mind, come forward and start with the right strategy to watch, mitigate, prevent, and subdue youth fallen under the influence of drugs addiction, adolescents gang fights and eventual brutal killings. The youth inherited from any parents or the families, regardless of any cast and creed are the future potential heroes of our country. It is our foremost duty to protect and correct them, prevent them from deviating to wrong path, arrange to provide them safety and security measures, and guide them to the right path leading to success.

We will not forget to mention that Royal Bhutan Police (RBP) were involved in all the isolated incidents in finding out the causes of killing, gather sufficient evidences, gleaning information and provide safety and security measures. Some cases were forwarded to the court for trial. We would like to thank the department, RBP for their police duty.
At the end, we would like to call upon and urge all people from various walks of life to support us, ultimately to support you on safety and security measures for our children living in the border towns.

Career talk organised by Mr.Phintsho, one of the activities of YES Bhutan Network after the YES Kenya 2006

Talk by Mr. Michael Doodson “Career choice in the MTV age.”

Reporting Officer: Phintsho Dorji, FAO Bhutan

The reporting officer after having attended the Youth Employment Summit (YES) Kenya September 2006 felt the need to organize something for the youth in Bhutan. Accordingly the RO organized the career talk.

The reporting officer in consultation with Mr. Doodson (a short time visitor to Bhutan) and with due permission from the Director of the School Education, Ministry of Education organized two career talks: on 30th October at Kelki Higher Secondary School, (KHSS) Thimphu and on 4th November at Jakar Higher Secondary School.(JHSS)

At KHSS, the principal gave the welcome speech. The RO introduced the speaker. Then Mr. Doodson gave the talk for about half an hour followed by question and answer session. The highlight of his talk was “he is not here to say what job to do but help to think. He has hired and employed people and comes with that perspective. He said it is an exciting time to be young in Bhutan today. Bhutan has been discovered. Many people love to come to Bhutan. If there were no limit, there would be more foreigners than Bhutanese. He asked the students to respect their culture, respect their tradition. Teach the rest of the world.” Mr. Doodson, in his talk also said that there would be 50% new jobs ten years hence. We don’t know but we should explore. He gave Mike’s seven (7) rules and explained them with examples:

1. Discover your passion
2. Be very good at doing it
3. Live your own life
4. Live in peace and harmony with others
5. Don’t plan too much
6. Don’t choose a career just for money and
7. Be responsible for yourself.

After the talk, enough time was given to the students to ask questions, make clarifications and to give comments. Twelve (12) questions were asked of which 5 were asked by girls. Questions were related to stock exchange, journalism, whether to follow success or to follow passion, chartered accountants, GNH, hotel management, whether a Bhutanese journalist can be part of BBC, failures in life, passion for basketball but no national basketball team in Bhutan, economic plans, Bhutan turning to democracy from monarchy and what do look for while recruiting people.
Questions were very well taken and answered. The question and answer session nearly lasted an hour. A Kelki boy gave the vote of thanks when the questions were exhausted. The turn out for the KHSS talk was good. There were around 480 students of Classes XI and XII from KHSS, Motithang HSS and Yangchenphug HSS with some teachers in attendance too.

At JHSS, the welcome speech was given by
Dechen (a Class X student). There were more
than 200 students (Classes X, XI and XII) and
15 teachers present in the talk. As usual the RO
gave the introduction of the speaker and then
Mr. Doodson spoke for about half an hour
followed by question and answer session.

Only six (6) questions were asked of which five
(5) came from boys. Questions were related to
how to promote writing, suggestion for earning a living (what to do if what the person likes does not earn a living, change in GNH after 2008, US is a dreamland of many nationalities, what makes people go there, how do you cope with stress and ambition to become scientist but Bhutan lacks equipment, what should the boy do? Very interesting questions were asked; relevant and interesting answers were given. The students here were little shy and reluctant to come forward and ask questions.

As soon as the sixth question was answered, Mr. Sangay Thinley, a Class XII student gave the vote of thanks. In his statement, he mentioned that the school has received many career councilors in the past but they were discriminating. They gave more opportunities to Science students whereas Mr. Doodson’s talk was very helpful and guidance to all the three streams. He called Michael’s 7 rules as Michael’s 7 noble rules.

Mrs. Ruth Doodson (who accompanied her husband) on the request of the Principal gave a talk on flying. How she started and how it is and how you should gather guts to do a dangerous job. Mrs. Doodson is a licenced pilot. Her talk gave lot of encouragement to the students to try out new things in life.

After the talk, we were joined by some
tourists and teachers of the JHSS. We had
a casual discussion. I gave my email
address to one of the teachers, in case the
students have questions to ask and if they
were shy to ask. Mr. Doodson said that he
would be happy to answer them by email
too.

YES Network Bhutan conducted Survey!

YES Bhutan Network

• The YES Bhutan network issues that au fond, involved and propagated in pervading beneficiary awareness among the peoples surviving in this world in vicissitude life, lifestyle and compelling situation that still appears enigma despite, self awareness and substantially informative journals and through many other educative media.

It is learnt through an erudite psychologist that thinking, feeling and willing will never coincide in one man to other. It is substantive and believed to be true. This did not, however desist such three elements and discouraged me from taking my initiative to substantiating international network agenda. And therefore I made up my mind to proceed to Gelephu. This is a district located in the southern central part of Bhutan.

On 24th April 2007, I went to Gelephu on behalf of YES Bhutan network. There I took the privilege to visit higher secondary school obtaining the prior permission from the vice principal of the school. I availed of the opportunity to meet scout leader and teachers besides students.

Despite busy schedule since the school was occupied with its academic session, I received cordial reception and ample time to highlight on the agenda I had enumerated. I enunciated to the students on the issue of fund raising programmes, spreading awareness campaign, substance abuse, employment, hiv/aids and meeting opportunities through hard working.

Indeed, this was my first experience speaking on educative issue disseminating on behalf of international network matters. I was delighted. I considered myself a potential speaker as I could receive applauses during my deliberation. I thank a galore to the international network for giving me such opportunity and courage to initiate and hold meeting to speak on agenda mentioned above.

The sudden end of a young hopeful life!

A Young Bhutanese, Beaten and Stabbed to Death by A Youth GangYeshey Nidup was from Bhutan, a small country in the Eastern Himalayas (South Asia). His friend, Pascal, who survived with minor injuries is from Germany. Both students of Bangkok University in Thailand.

The sudden end of a young hopeful life! What happened?.

On the 29th of July 2005, Yeshey had finished his exam and wanted to celebrate by going out to party with his friends. At around 04:30 hrs. Yeshey and his university friend, Pascal, made their way back home on Pascal’s motorcycle. They stopped at the traffic lights and were waiting for it to turn green, when suddenly three young bikers came from behind and started to beat up Yeshey. Pascal saw the gang stabbing Yeshey with knives and machetes and beating him with a bat. The gang then drove off when the light turned green, and Yeshey, although seriously injured and bleeding severely, was able to get back on the motorcycle. He asked Pascal to take him to a hospital and then lost consciousness. Pascal was in a state of shock but managed to ask a passer by to call the police. Minutes later two traffic policemen arrived on the scene and radioed for an ambulance. By the time the ambulance arrived, Yeshey had no pulse.

The vicious beatings, which took only a fraction of a minute, had totally smashed Yeshey’s left knee and severed the artery, through which he lost a lot of blood while waiting for the ambulance. His right hand was cut clean through between the ring and the little finger to the wrist. The paramedics spent approximately 30 minutes on the spot trying to resuscitate him – after which Yeshey was taken to a hospital, where he fell into a coma. His left leg had to be amputated, but the doctors had to wait until his condition had stabilized. Later, after Yeshey’s leg had been amputated, his heart stopped beating and all the doctor’s attempts to revive him were in vain. Yeshey passed away on 1 August 2005.

Yeshey’s friend Pascal said that since they had not engaged in any arguments or fights throughout the evening, the attack came as a total surprise. It might have been a mistaken identity or a random attack by gang members who were high on a Methamphetamine called “Ya Ba” (a local drug). Pascal sustained minor injuries.

Message to the Readers

The reason for sharing this story is to bring awareness of reckless acts of violence by “Youth Gangs” to as many people as possible, especially to “The Youths of the World”.

Such gangs are unfortunately found not only in Bangkok but also in almost every country of the world. It is understood that they often savagely attack innocent victims for no apparent reasons. Some do it for fun, some as an initiation rite for a new member and some for various other reasons. Whatever the reason, it does not justify such actions.

It is known that gangs usually attack their victims with bats, machetes, chains, knives, or any other weapons they posses. They then often mercilessly kick and beat their victims.

To those of you who think that you could not be affected by such violence, think again. Yeshey’s family and friends never expected him to die - beaten and mutilated in the capital of a country known as the “Land of Smiles”. Yeshey’s family is still in shock and cannot comprehend why and how such a tragedy could be part of their lives.

So, protect yourself and leave nothing to chance. Be vigilant and do not expose yourself to such danger. If you have to stay out late, avoid deserted areas and move around in groups. If you see a similar incident, please help to call the ambulance and police. Yeshey may have been saved had he received immediate medical attention.

Love your brothers, sisters, and your friends. Show them that you love and respect them so that they do not seek the wrong company, that may pretend to give them what they seek, but could ultimately destroy their lives and future.

Your thoughtful action will save unimaginable grief to your parents and family members who love you (much more than you might realise).

Help each other and to the extent possible avoid being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Keep away from Gangs and keep away from Drugs. We seek your solidarity in making this world a safer place.
**********************************************************
Note: If you find Yeshey’s story useful, please share it with other youths, communities, websites or publish it in your newspapers. If this could make a difference in one person’s life, we will think Yeshey died for a reason.

In case you are publishing this article in your newspaper, website or if you think this had made a difference in your life, please share it with us at the following address:

E-mail: chokid2004@yahoo.co.uk
Fax: 00 975-2-361-185 (Bhutan)

At the time of writing this article, Yeshey’s family is still waiting for some information and comments from the Thai Police.
